GivEnergy and Fox ESS are two of the most popular home battery brands in the UK. If you are researching battery storage for your solar panels, these two names come up constantly. Both are solid choices. But they are not identical.

We install Fox ESS (and SigEnergy) at Depth of Light. This is an honest comparison — we will explain why we chose Fox ESS, but also where GivEnergy has strengths.

GivEnergy: The Overview

GivEnergy is a UK-headquartered company based in Newcastle. They have been in the home battery market since around 2019 and have grown rapidly. They are probably the most recognisable battery brand among UK homeowners right now.

Key specs:

  • Popular model: GivEnergy 9.5 kWh battery + 5 kW hybrid inverter
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Cycle life: 6,000 cycles (roughly 16 years of daily cycling)
  • Expandable: Yes — you can stack additional battery units for more capacity
  • App: GivEnergy portal and app. Well-designed, lots of data, active community
  • Typical installed price: £5,000–£6,500 for the 9.5 kWh system

GivEnergy's biggest strength is its community and software. The GivEnergy portal gives you detailed energy flow data, and there is a large online community of owners sharing tips, tariff strategies, and performance data. If you enjoy tinkering with settings and optimising every kilowatt-hour, GivEnergy's platform is excellent.

The hardware is good. Not the cheapest, but well-built and reliable. Their inverters handle both solar input and battery management in one unit, which keeps the installation clean.

Fox ESS: The Overview

Fox ESS is a global energy storage company with a growing UK presence. They have invested heavily in the UK market over the past few years and have become a serious competitor to GivEnergy, particularly on value.

Key specs:

  • Range: 5.2 kWh, 10.4 kWh, and larger configurations
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Cycle life: 6,000+ cycles
  • Hybrid inverter: Included — Fox ESS hybrid inverters are among the best value on the market
  • App: Fox ESS Cloud app. Clear, functional, good real-time monitoring
  • Typical installed price: £4,200–£5,500 for a 10 kWh system

Fox ESS's biggest strength is value per kWh. You get more storage capacity for your money compared to GivEnergy. Their hybrid inverters are well-regarded by installers — reliable, efficient, and straightforward to commission.

The Fox ESS monitoring app is not quite as feature-rich as GivEnergy's portal, but it covers everything most homeowners need: real-time energy flows, daily/monthly/yearly summaries, and battery state of charge. For the majority of users, it does the job well.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Price: Fox ESS wins. A 10 kWh Fox ESS system typically comes in £500–£1,000 less than a comparable GivEnergy setup. That is a meaningful difference when budgets matter.

Brand recognition: GivEnergy wins. They have been marketing directly to homeowners for longer and have a larger online presence. More people have heard of them.

App and monitoring: GivEnergy has the edge. Their portal is more detailed, and the community around it is larger. Fox ESS's app is perfectly good for day-to-day use, but power users may prefer GivEnergy's depth.

Hardware reliability: Both are good. We have seen very low fault rates with Fox ESS systems across our installations in Milton Keynes. GivEnergy also has a solid track record. Neither brand gives us cause for concern.

Warranty: Both offer 10-year warranties. GivEnergy warrants to 80% capacity retention. Fox ESS offers similar terms. In practice, both should last well beyond the warranty period.

Installer support: Fox ESS has invested significantly in UK-based technical support for installers. Response times are fast and their engineering team is knowledgeable. GivEnergy also has good support, though some installers report longer wait times as the company has scaled rapidly.

Expandability: Both systems can be expanded with additional battery modules. GivEnergy's stacking system is slightly more flexible for incremental upgrades. Fox ESS supports expansion too, but the options depend on the specific inverter model.

Why We Install Fox ESS

We chose Fox ESS for a few specific reasons:

  • Better value for our customers. The price difference is real. On a typical solar and battery package, Fox ESS saves the customer £500–£1,000 versus GivEnergy for equivalent storage capacity.
  • Excellent hybrid inverters. The Fox ESS hybrid inverter handles both solar and battery management in one compact unit. It is efficient, quiet, and reliable.
  • Strong installer support. When we need technical help, Fox ESS responds quickly. That means faster resolution for customers if anything ever needs attention.
  • Proven performance. We have been installing Fox ESS systems across Milton Keynes for several years now. The real-world performance matches the spec sheet. Customers are happy.

SigEnergy: Our Premium Option

Alongside Fox ESS, we also install SigEnergy battery systems. SigEnergy sits at the premium end of the market.

What sets SigEnergy apart:

  • Build quality. The finish and engineering are a step above. These are seriously well-made units.
  • Longer warranty options. SigEnergy offers extended warranty terms for customers who want maximum peace of mind.
  • Advanced monitoring. The SigEnergy app provides detailed analytics and system health data.
  • Ideal for larger installations. SigEnergy systems scale well for larger homes or higher energy demands.

If budget is the priority, Fox ESS is the right pick. If you want the premium option with the best build quality and longest warranty coverage, SigEnergy is worth the step up.

The Honest Take

Both GivEnergy and Fox ESS are good products. If someone already has a GivEnergy system installed, we would not suggest ripping it out. It is a solid battery that will serve them well for years.

The reality is that the difference between these two brands is smaller than the marketing might suggest. Both store solar energy. Both reduce your grid reliance. Both have 10-year warranties. Both will save you £500–£600 per year on top of your solar panel savings.

The main practical difference is price. Fox ESS delivers more kWh of storage per pound spent. For most homeowners, that matters more than app features or brand recognition.

What About Tesla Powerwall and Sonnen

We get asked about these occasionally. Quick summary:

  • Tesla Powerwall: good product, but significantly more expensive (£8,000–£10,000 installed for 13.5 kWh). The brand premium is substantial. The performance per pound is lower than Fox ESS or GivEnergy.
  • Sonnen: German-made, premium pricing, excellent build quality. But availability in the UK is limited and installed costs are high.

Neither Tesla nor Sonnen offer meaningfully better performance than Fox ESS or GivEnergy for the typical UK home. You are paying for the brand name. For most customers in Milton Keynes, the value proposition does not add up.

How to Choose

If you are deciding between these brands, here is the simple version:

  • Best value: Fox ESS. More storage per pound. Reliable hardware. What we install and recommend.
  • Best app/community: GivEnergy. If you want to deep-dive into energy data and join an active user community, GivEnergy's platform is excellent.
  • Premium option: SigEnergy. Best build quality, longest warranty options, ideal for larger homes.

All three will do the fundamental job — storing your solar energy and cutting your electricity bills — reliably and for years to come.
