Tesla Powerwall Installation
Milton Keynes

13.5kWh of home battery storage from the world's most recognised energy brand. Installed by MCS-certified engineers. From £8,000 fully installed.

What Is the Tesla Powerwall?

The Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable home battery system that stores electricity from your solar panels or the grid, so you can use it when you need it most — in the evening, overnight, or during a power cut.

Tesla's latest model, the Powerwall 3, is a significant step up from its predecessor. It includes an integrated solar inverter, meaning you don't need a separate inverter for your panels. That simplifies the installation, reduces equipment costs, and gives you a cleaner setup.

We install Tesla Powerwalls across Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire — both as part of new solar and battery packages and as retrofits to existing solar systems.

What Changed with the Powerwall 3?

Tesla discontinued the Powerwall 2 in favour of the Powerwall 3. Here are the key differences that matter.

Feature Powerwall 2 Powerwall 3
Usable capacity 13.5 kWh 13.5 kWh
Continuous output 5 kW 5 kW
Peak output 7 kW 7 kW
Integrated solar inverter No — separate inverter required Yes — built-in inverter
Solar input AC-coupled only DC-coupled (direct from panels)
Efficiency advantage Standard AC conversion losses Higher efficiency — fewer conversion steps

The biggest practical difference is the integrated inverter. On the Powerwall 3, solar panels connect directly to the battery (DC-coupled), which means fewer components, a cleaner installation, and slightly better overall efficiency. If you're installing solar and battery together, the Powerwall 3 simplifies the whole system.

What Makes the Powerwall Stand Out

There are plenty of home batteries on the market. Here's what sets the Tesla Powerwall apart — and why some customers are willing to pay the premium.

Best-in-class app

The Tesla app gives you real-time visibility of solar generation, battery charge, home consumption, and grid import/export. It's genuinely one of the best energy monitoring apps available — intuitive, fast, and detailed.

Storm Watch & backup gateway

With a Backup Gateway installed, the Powerwall automatically powers your home during grid outages. Storm Watch monitors weather forecasts and pre-charges the battery when severe weather is expected — so you're prepared before the lights go out.

Time-based control

The Powerwall can automatically charge from the grid during cheap off-peak hours (like Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus) and discharge during expensive peak periods. This maximises your savings even beyond what solar alone provides.

Sleek, compact design

The Powerwall is wall-mounted and genuinely good-looking as far as batteries go. It's compact enough to fit in a garage, utility room, or on an exterior wall. The integrated inverter on the Powerwall 3 means less equipment overall.

Tesla Powerwall Cost in Milton Keynes (2026)

Tesla Powerwall pricing varies depending on your installation. Here's what to expect in the Milton Keynes area.

What affects the price?

The Powerwall 3 itself has a set wholesale cost, but the installed price varies based on:

  • Electrical upgrades — older consumer units may need replacing to meet current regulations
  • Retrofit vs new install — adding to an existing solar system can be slightly more complex
  • Backup Gateway — required if you want power-cut protection (adds to the cost)
  • Cable runs and access — longer cable routes or difficult access increase labour time

Typical installed price: £8,000–£11,000 for a single Tesla Powerwall 3, including all equipment, labour, and commissioning. 0% VAT applies when installed alongside solar panels on residential properties.

Solar + Powerwall Package

Combining solar panels with a Powerwall gives you the best value. The Powerwall 3's integrated inverter means you save on a separate inverter entirely.

4kWp solar + Powerwall 3 £14,000–£17,000
Self-consumption rate Up to 80–90%
Typical annual saving £1,200–£1,600

Tesla Powerwall vs GivEnergy

This is the question we get asked most. Both are excellent home batteries, but they suit different priorities. Here's the honest breakdown.

Where Tesla wins

  • App experience — the Tesla app is cleaner, faster, and more intuitive than any competitor
  • Design and build quality — the Powerwall looks better than any other home battery on the market
  • Storm Watch — automatic pre-charging before bad weather is a genuinely useful feature
  • Integrated inverter (Powerwall 3) — fewer components, simpler installation

Where GivEnergy wins

  • Price — GivEnergy systems typically cost £2,000–£3,000 less for similar capacity
  • Flexible sizing — GivEnergy offers modular battery packs so you can start smaller and expand later
  • UK-based support — GivEnergy has UK headquarters and responsive technical support

Our take: If you want the best app, the best-looking battery, and budget isn't the main concern — go Tesla. If you want maximum value for money and flexible sizing, GivEnergy is the smarter financial choice. Both are solid products we're happy to install. Tesla Powerwall Installation Process

Free Survey & Quote

We visit your property, assess your electrical setup, check mounting options (garage wall, utility room, or exterior), and review your energy usage. You get a fixed-price quote — no surprises.

Installation Day

A Tesla Powerwall installation typically takes one day. We mount the battery, connect it to your consumer unit (and solar panels if applicable), install the Backup Gateway if included, and commission the system. We configure the Tesla app on your phone before we leave.

Handover & Documentation

We walk you through the Tesla app, explain the operating modes (self-powered, time-based control, backup reserve), and issue all MCS documentation. DNO notification is handled by us where required.

Installation requirements

The Powerwall needs a wall-mounted position with adequate ventilation. Most installations go in a garage, utility room, or on an exterior wall. Key requirements:

  • Wall strong enough to support 114kg (the Powerwall 3's weight)
  • Wi-Fi signal at the installation location (for app connectivity)
  • Sufficient clearance around the unit for ventilation
  • Consumer unit in reasonable condition (we'll advise during survey)
  • Operating temperature range: -20°C to 50°C (fine for UK conditions)

10-Year Tesla Powerwall Warranty

Tesla provides a 10-year warranty on the Powerwall, guaranteeing the battery will retain at least 70% of its original 13.5kWh capacity over the warranty period. This covers:

  • The battery unit itself
  • The integrated inverter (on Powerwall 3)
  • Unlimited charge/discharge cycles during the warranty period

In practice, lithium-ion batteries like the Powerwall are expected to last well beyond 10 years. Degradation is gradual — most owners can expect 80–90% capacity remaining after a decade of normal use.

On top of Tesla's warranty, our own installation work is covered by MCS standards and our workmanship guarantee. Read more about battery lifespan in our solar battery storage guide.

Is the Tesla Powerwall Worth It?

We'll give you the straight answer: the Tesla Powerwall is a premium product at a premium price. Whether it's "worth it" depends on what you're optimising for.

It's worth it if:

  • You want the best monitoring app and user experience — Tesla's app is genuinely excellent
  • You value design — the Powerwall is the best-looking home battery available
  • You want power-cut protection with Storm Watch — useful if you're in a rural area or have experienced outages
  • You're pairing it with new solar panels — the Powerwall 3's integrated inverter simplifies the system and saves on equipment
  • You already own a Tesla vehicle and want everything in one app ecosystem

It may not be worth the premium if:

  • Pure payback speed is your main concern — a GivEnergy or similar system at £5,000–£7,000 will pay back faster due to the lower upfront cost
  • You want modular expansion — GivEnergy lets you add battery capacity later more easily
  • You're on a tight budget — the extra £2,000–£3,000 over alternatives may not be justified by the features alone

Our honest recommendation: If your budget allows it and you care about the day-to-day experience of owning a home battery, the Powerwall is hard to beat. If you're primarily focused on financial return, there are equally good batteries for less money. We install both and we'll tell you which one makes more sense for your situation during the survey. Tesla Powerwall FAQs

A Tesla Powerwall 3 typically costs between £8,000 and £11,000 fully installed in the Milton Keynes area. The price depends on installation complexity, electrical upgrades needed, and whether you're adding backup gateway functionality. 0% VAT applies when installed alongside solar panels on residential properties.

For typical overnight usage (8–10kWh), a single Powerwall handles it comfortably. It delivers 5kW continuous power, which covers lighting, fridge, TV, broadband, and moderate appliance use. It won't continuously run an electric shower (8–10kW) or a large oven, but it handles normal household loads well. You can stack multiple Powerwalls for higher demand.

Tesla provides a 10-year warranty guaranteeing at least 70% capacity retention. This covers the battery unit, the integrated inverter (on Powerwall 3), and unlimited charge/discharge cycles. It's one of the strongest battery warranties in the market — and in practice, most Powerwalls retain significantly more than 70% after 10 years.

Yes — when installed with a Backup Gateway. The system detects a grid outage within milliseconds and switches your home to battery power automatically. Your lights stay on, your fridge keeps running, and you won't even notice the switch. Storm Watch can also pre-charge the battery when bad weather is forecast. Note: the Backup Gateway is an additional component — we'll include it in your quote if backup power is important to you.

They're both excellent — it depends on your priorities. Tesla wins on app quality, design, and features like Storm Watch. GivEnergy wins on price (typically £2,000–£3,000 less), modular expansion, and UK-based support. If budget is the priority, GivEnergy. If you want the premium experience, Tesla. We install both and we'll recommend whichever makes more sense for you. See our battery brand comparison for more detail.
