What is balcony or plug-in solar?

Balcony solar — also called plug-in solar — is a small solar system, typically up to 800W, designed to mount on a balcony railing, terrace, flat roof, garage or outbuilding wall. Unlike a full rooftop installation, it doesn't need scaffolding or a structural roof survey, and it can often be removed and taken with you when you move.

It's a strong fit for:

  • Renters who can't modify the roof but have a balcony or terrace
  • Owners of flats and apartments
  • Granny annexes, garden offices, garages and outbuildings
  • Anyone who wants a small, low-cost entry point to solar

The April 2026 rule change — BS 7671 Amendment 4

Until April 2026 plug-in solar sat in a legal grey area in the UK. BS 7671 Amendment 4 — the latest update to the UK's wiring regulations — formally allows plug-in solar systems for the first time, but with conditions:

  • Systems must be hardwired by a registered electrician until DIY-grade plug-and-play kits are formally certified later in 2026
  • The DNO must be notified under G98 for any system that exports to the grid
  • The 800W limit is per property, not per panel
What changes after July 2026? Once the new G98/DIY framework is finalised, certified plug-and-play kits will be allowed in some scenarios. For now, the safest and only fully compliant route is a hardwired install.

Renters' Rights Act 2025 — your right to request

The Renters' Rights Act 2025 introduced a "right to request" clause that means landlords can no longer unreasonably refuse a tenant's request to install reversible energy efficiency measures, including balcony solar.

If you're a tenant in Milton Keynes and you want to add a small solar setup to your balcony, we can provide:

  • A written specification you can hand to your landlord
  • Confirmation that the installation is reversible and won't damage the property
  • MCS certification on completion (which often satisfies landlord and insurance requirements)

What's included in a balcony solar install

  • Free site survey and DNO check
  • Supply and fitting of 1-2 panels (up to 800W combined)
  • Microinverter or string inverter sized for the system
  • Hardwired connection to your consumer unit (with a dedicated MCB)
  • G98 DNO notification handled for you
  • MCS certificate
  • Handover pack and quick-start guide for your monitoring app

Cost — typical UK pricing

Single Panel (~400W)
From £800
Hardwired, MCS certified, fully installed
Twin Panel (~800W)
From £1,400
Maximum allowed under current rules
DIY Kit (Risk)
£400–£600
Currently non-compliant — voids insurance

The DIY kit option may look cheaper, but it currently voids most home insurance policies, can't claim 0% VAT, and isn't legally compliant with the current G98 rules. A hardwired install gives you all three.

Is balcony solar right for me?

Quick checklist — if you tick most of these, balcony solar is worth a look:

  • You can't fit a rooftop system (flat, rented, listed, or shaded)
  • Your balcony, terrace or outbuilding wall faces roughly south, east or west
  • You're home during the day at least some of the time (so you use what you generate)
  • You want a small, fast-payback entry to solar
  • You may move home in the next 5-10 years (the system can come with you)

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my landlord's permission for balcony solar?
Yes. Under the Renters' Rights Act 2025 your landlord can't unreasonably refuse, but you must still ask. We'll provide written documentation and confirm the install is fully reversible — that satisfies most landlords.
How much will I save with an 800W balcony system?
An 800W system in Milton Keynes generates roughly 700-800 kWh per year. If you use most of it at home, that's £170-£200 saved annually at current rates. Payback is typically 6-9 years.
Can I take the panels with me if I move?
Yes. The panels and inverter are removable. You'll need an electrician at the new property to reconnect — we can do that for you or recommend a local installer.
Do I need planning permission?
No, in almost all cases. Balcony solar that doesn't project beyond the property line falls under permitted development. Listed buildings and some conservation areas are exceptions — we'll check during the survey.
Why is the limit 800W?
It's the threshold above which the DNO has to specifically approve the connection (G99 instead of G98). Up to 800W can use the simpler G98 notification process.
Can I add more panels later?
Up to the 800W limit, yes. Above that you'll need either a full G99 application or to look at a proper rooftop installation. We'll advise during the survey.
Will I export power to the grid?
Some, yes — anything you don't use at the moment of generation goes to the grid. With MCS certification you can register for the Smart Export Guarantee and get paid for it.
What happens after July 2026 when DIY kits become permitted?
DIY plug-and-play kits will become legal in some scenarios. We'll still recommend professional install for the safety, insurance and MCS benefits — but you'll have the option of a cheaper non-MCS DIY route.
