Plug-In & Balcony Solar Panels in Milton Keynes
Plug-in and balcony solar are now legal in the UK following BS 7671 Amendment 4. Until DIY kits are formally certified later in 2026, every install needs a registered electrician — that's where we come in.
What is balcony or plug-in solar?
Balcony solar — also called plug-in solar — is a small solar system, typically up to 800W, designed to mount on a balcony railing, terrace, flat roof, garage or outbuilding wall. Unlike a full rooftop installation, it doesn't need scaffolding or a structural roof survey, and it can often be removed and taken with you when you move.
It's a strong fit for:
- Renters who can't modify the roof but have a balcony or terrace
- Owners of flats and apartments
- Granny annexes, garden offices, garages and outbuildings
- Anyone who wants a small, low-cost entry point to solar
The April 2026 rule change — BS 7671 Amendment 4
Until April 2026 plug-in solar sat in a legal grey area in the UK. BS 7671 Amendment 4 — the latest update to the UK's wiring regulations — formally allows plug-in solar systems for the first time, but with conditions:
- Systems must be hardwired by a registered electrician until DIY-grade plug-and-play kits are formally certified later in 2026
- The DNO must be notified under G98 for any system that exports to the grid
- The 800W limit is per property, not per panel
Renters' Rights Act 2025 — your right to request
The Renters' Rights Act 2025 introduced a "right to request" clause that means landlords can no longer unreasonably refuse a tenant's request to install reversible energy efficiency measures, including balcony solar.
If you're a tenant in Milton Keynes and you want to add a small solar setup to your balcony, we can provide:
- A written specification you can hand to your landlord
- Confirmation that the installation is reversible and won't damage the property
- MCS certification on completion (which often satisfies landlord and insurance requirements)
What's included in a balcony solar install
- Free site survey and DNO check
- Supply and fitting of 1-2 panels (up to 800W combined)
- Microinverter or string inverter sized for the system
- Hardwired connection to your consumer unit (with a dedicated MCB)
- G98 DNO notification handled for you
- MCS certificate
- Handover pack and quick-start guide for your monitoring app
Cost — typical UK pricing
The DIY kit option may look cheaper, but it currently voids most home insurance policies, can't claim 0% VAT, and isn't legally compliant with the current G98 rules. A hardwired install gives you all three.
Is balcony solar right for me?
Quick checklist — if you tick most of these, balcony solar is worth a look:
- You can't fit a rooftop system (flat, rented, listed, or shaded)
- Your balcony, terrace or outbuilding wall faces roughly south, east or west
- You're home during the day at least some of the time (so you use what you generate)
- You want a small, fast-payback entry to solar
- You may move home in the next 5-10 years (the system can come with you)
