Panel cleaning
UK panels collect dust, pollen, bird droppings, lichen and the residue of every wet/dry cycle. Lightly soiled panels lose 5-10% of output; heavily soiled panels can lose up to 25%. On a 4kWp system that's £100-£300 of generation per year — far more than a clean costs.
We clean using a pure water fed pole system from ground level. No detergents (which leave streaks and can damage anti-reflective coatings), no ladders on your roof, and no risk of micro-scratching from dry brushes.
How often? Once or twice a year for most installs. Properties near trees, farmland or busy roads often need twice yearly. We can build it into a yearly maintenance plan at a reduced rate.
Annual health check
The single most cost-effective thing you can do to protect your solar investment. A health check is what your manufacturer assumes you're doing when they quote you a 25-year performance warranty — and what's required to make a warranty claim if something goes wrong.
What we check on every visit:
- Per-panel output vs. expected (using inverter or microinverter data)
- Inverter error logs and historical fault patterns
- All DC and AC cabling and MC4 connectors
- Roof fixings, K2 / GSE rails and grounding
- DC isolator and AC isolator
- Generation meter reading vs. inverter total (catches metering faults)
- Earthing and bonding check
- Visual inspection for hot spots, microcracks and shading changes
You get a written performance report covering everything we found, recommended actions, and a comparison to your expected annual generation.
Bird proofing — stainless mesh system
Pigeons love the space under solar panels — warm, sheltered, south-facing. The damage they cause is usually invisible until you check: chewed wiring, droppings degrading frames, blocked drainage, and noise/mess for you and your neighbours. Worse, most panel manufacturers will void the warranty if pigeon damage is found.
We fit a stainless steel mesh system screwed directly to the panel frame — no penetrations into the roof, no proprietary adhesives, fully removable for future panel cleaning or replacement.
Inverter servicing
Inverters are the working part of a solar system — and they're the part most likely to fail. A typical string inverter lasts 10-12 years; hybrid inverters slightly less under heavy battery cycling. Service signs to watch for:
- Reduced output with no obvious cause (panels look fine, weather is sunny)
- Error codes on the display or in the monitoring app
- Audible buzzing or fan noise that wasn't there before
- Inverter running hot to the touch
- Frequent restarts or loss of grid connection
We service SolarEdge, SMA, Growatt, GivEnergy, Solis, Fronius, Huawei, Fox ESS and most other inverters sold in the UK. If yours has failed completely we can quote like-for-like or recommend an upgrade if the original is end-of-life.
System monitoring setup
If your installer didn't set up monitoring (or they did and you've never opened the app), we can do this remotely or on a maintenance visit. Setup includes:
- Connecting your inverter to your home WiFi
- Configuring the manufacturer app (SolarEdge mySolarEdge, GivEnergy Cloud, Fox ESS, etc.)
- Setting up alerts for low generation, faults and grid disconnection
- Explaining what the data means — daily, monthly, yearly
- Cross-checking inverter data against your SEG export readings
How often do solar panels need maintenance?
Short answer: annually. A combined cleaning + health check visit once a year is the right cadence for almost all UK domestic installs. Properties with bird issues or near significant tree cover may need a second clean.
Annual maintenance is also generally required to keep manufacturer warranties valid on panels and inverters — a small recurring cost that protects a much larger asset.
Annual maintenance plan
We offer a yearly package combining one panel clean + one full health check at a reduced bundled rate. We send a reminder before each visit — no need to remember.
