Why use a professional?

Smart home devices work brilliantly when set up properly — and frustratingly when they're not. Common DIY problems we see:

  • WiFi signal dropping out in parts of the house — we plan and install mesh WiFi if needed
  • Devices that don't talk to each other because of mixed protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, WiFi)
  • Scenes and automations that nearly-but-don't-quite work
  • App overload — five different apps, no central control

We design the system end-to-end, configure scenes that match how you actually live, and walk you through the apps before we leave.

Smart lighting — Philips Hue and beyond

Philips Hue is the most popular smart lighting platform we install. Endless colour, dimming, scenes, automation, and integration with every major voice assistant. We also install LIFX, Lutron and wired DALI systems for whole-house projects.

Smart lighting installation includes the hub, switches and dimmers, scene programming, and voice-assistant integration.

Solar + smart home — the natural pairing

If you have solar panels or battery storage, smart home integration is what turns "free electricity" into "actually using free electricity":

  • Smart plugs automatically run high-load appliances (dishwasher, washing machine) when solar is generating
  • Heat pump scheduling times the heaviest hot-water heating to solar peak hours
  • EV charging times overnight off-peak and pauses for solar generation
  • Battery management integrates with smart tariffs (Octopus Flux, Intelligent Octopus)

We can quote a solar / battery install plus the smart-home glue layer as a single project.

Smart heating — Hive, Nest, Tado

Smart thermostats are the single biggest energy-saving smart home upgrade — typically 10-25% off your heating bill via geofencing, learned schedules and zone control. We install Hive, Google Nest, Tado and Honeywell. For ASHP owners we also configure smart-tariff scheduling so heating runs hardest during cheap off-peak windows.

25%

Typical heating bill saving from a smart thermostat alone, before adding zone valves or geofencing. On a £1,400/year heating bill that's £350/year saved — payback in 6-12 months.

Hive — UK's most installed

British Gas's smart heating range. Hive Hub controls the thermostat, plus expandable to motion sensors, smart bulbs and door/window contacts. Cheaper than Nest, simpler to use, and the British Gas service network means easy long-term support.

Google Nest — learning algorithm

The premium choice — learns your patterns over the first week and builds a schedule automatically. Cleaner industrial design, and integrates beautifully with Nest Mini speakers and Google Home for voice control. Best fit for tech-forward households.

Energy monitoring

You can't optimise what you can't see. Whole-home and per-circuit monitoring options:

  • Hildebrand Glow — pairs with your smart meter, no consumer-unit work needed
  • Smappee — clamp-on monitor at the consumer unit, identifies individual appliances by signature
  • Emporia Vue — per-circuit monitoring with up to 16 channels
  • Octopus integration — energy use plotted against tariff cost in real time

For solar/battery owners, energy monitoring shows generation, battery state of charge, grid import/export, and per-circuit usage — all in one app.

Voice assistants & smart speakers

Voice control turns a smart home from "nice setup" into something you actually use every day. We work with all three platforms — Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit — and increasingly the new Matter standard which works across all of them. We configure your existing devices to work with your chosen voice assistant; you don't need to be locked into a single brand.

Our approach — no single-brand lock-in

We don't push a single ecosystem. Where the standards exist (Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave) we use them — meaning your devices keep working even if a manufacturer goes out of business or changes their cloud terms. Where proprietary systems are the right answer (Hue, Lutron) we use those — but we'll tell you what you're committing to.

Honest advice on what works together is the main thing we add over a DIY install.

What a fully-integrated smart home looks like

The end-state most clients want isn't a single gadget — it's a home that quietly does the right thing. Lights that warm gradually as evening falls. Heating that knows you're on your way home. Solar generation that automatically routes to the dishwasher. EV charging that pauses when you put the kettle on. All controlled from one app, with voice or scene buttons for the things you change daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will smart home devices work if my internet goes down?
Local-first systems (Hue with hub, Lutron, Z-Wave) keep working — you can still control via switch and locally. Cloud-only systems lose voice and remote control until internet is back. We design with this in mind.
Can you mix Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit?
Yes — most modern devices support all three. Matter (the new universal standard) is making this easier still. We configure all three if you have a mixed-device household.
How does smart home work with solar?
Smart plugs and energy-aware appliances run automatically when solar is generating. Heating and EV charging schedule around solar peak. Combined, this dramatically increases your solar self-consumption.
Will I need new WiFi for smart home?
Often yes — many smart devices are sensitive to WiFi quality. We can install mesh WiFi (Eero, Deco, Ubiquiti) as part of the project if your existing setup isn't strong enough.
Is smart home secure?
When properly configured, yes. We change all default passwords, isolate IoT devices on a separate network where possible, and walk you through the security settings. Most security incidents we see come from weak passwords on default cloud accounts.
Can I add smart home gradually?
Absolutely — the right approach for most people. Start with one room or one system (lighting, or heating) and expand. We design the initial setup so it's easy to add to later.
