Not currently open
Solar Together is not open in Milton Keynes at the time of writing. MK City Council has been out to tender for a group-buying supplier, so a scheme looks likely — but there is no live registration.
You can register interest
Registration for a future round is free and carries no obligation. If a round opens you get a proposal; you are under no duty to accept it.
How the auction works
Households register, suppliers bid in a closed auction, and the winning bid is offered to everyone who registered. The more people register, the harder suppliers compete.
One installer wins everything
The whole cohort is served by the auction winner. That is where the price comes from, and it is also the main thing to weigh up.
Timescales are fixed, not yours
Rounds run to the scheme's calendar. If your roof needs work first, or you want to install before a deadline, the timing may not line up.
It is not a grant
No public money changes hands. It is bulk purchasing, and the saving comes from volume rather than subsidy.
Group buying against going direct
Both are legitimate. They suit different people, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
Where group buying wins
A straightforward roof, no rush, and no strong view on equipment. Volume pricing on a simple install is genuinely hard to beat.
Where it does not
Anything unusual — a flat roof on one of the Radburn estates, slate in a conservation area, a board that needs upgrading first, or a heat pump the array has to be sized around. Auction pricing assumes a standard job.
You do not choose the installer
Nor the panel, inverter or battery brand, beyond what the winning bid includes. If you have researched equipment, that matters.
Quotes are worth comparing anyway
Take the scheme's proposal and put it next to an independent quote. If ours is not competitive we will say so.
Aftercare is local either way
Whoever fits it, you will want someone who can come back. Worth asking the scheme where the winning installer is actually based.
Register and still shop around
Registering costs nothing and commits you to nothing. There is no reason not to have both numbers in front of you.
