“Called Depth of Light because I was having trouble with my electricity tripping when solar panels kicked in each morning. Matt came round within a few days and spoke with Solis. Between them the fault was identified and Matt came and fitted a new RCD. Fast, professional, friendly service. Would recommend.”
“Matt did an amazing job replacing our old fuse box! He was super clean, kept us informed every step of the way, and did a really professional job. We’ve used him for various other work since and we’ll definitely keep using his services again.”

What we find on Berkhamsted roofs
Victorian terraces near the canal
The streets between the High Street and the canal are largely Victorian terrace: narrow roofs, often slate, with rear outriggers. Roof width usually limits the array before your budget does, and slate needs the right fixings and proper scaffold.
The High Street conservation area
The centre of Berkhamsted is a conservation area with many listed buildings. Roof panels on an unlisted house there are usually permitted development, but listed buildings need consent. We check before we quote.
The valley sides and the Chilterns
The roads climbing out of the valley have larger interwar and post-war houses with bigger roofs. The town is surrounded by the Chilterns National Landscape. Roof panels are usually still permitted development in the Chilterns National Landscape, but wall-mounted panels facing the road are not, and listed buildings and Article 4 areas need consent. We check before we quote.
The parts that change the price
Shading from the hills
In a valley, a roof that looks clear in summer can lose low winter sun behind the opposite slope or the house uphill. We assess shading as part of the MCS performance estimate, so the figure you are quoted allows for it.
Scaffolding on steep and narrow streets
Sloping streets and pavement scaffolds change the price. We would rather tell you at survey than add it later.
Grid connection
Larger inverters and batteries need G99 approval from the local network operator before they can be switched on. We check which operator covers your postcode, make the application and handle the paperwork.
Working in Berkhamsted from Milton Keynes
We are based in Bletchley, about 40 minutes from Berkhamsted. That matters less for the install than for what comes after: if something needs looking at, we come out ourselves rather than subcontract it.
Our nearest finished job in the Chilterns is at Little Kimble, near Princes Risborough: solar and a battery on a slate cottage roof, with a full write-up.
We have not finished a job in Berkhamsted itself yet, and we won't pretend otherwise. Our nearest Hertfordshire job is in Welwyn Garden City.
Solar Panels in Berkhamsted — FAQ
From £5,600 for a 3.72kWp system and £5,900 for a 5.58kWp system on a straightforward roof, at 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Slate terraces and steep streets can cost more because of scaffolding and fixings, which we price at survey rather than adding later.
Usually not for roof panels on an unlisted house. In the Chilterns National Landscape, wall-mounted panels facing a road do need permission, and so do listed buildings and anywhere under an Article 4 direction. We check your address before we quote.
Yes. It is about 40 minutes from our Bletchley base. We have not finished a job in the town itself yet; the nearest are at Little Kimble and Quainton.
How it works
1. We call you back
Usually the same working day, to talk through what you want and book a survey.
2. Roof survey
About 40 minutes at your home. We measure the roof, check the consumer unit and look at where a battery could go.
3. A fixed price in writing
With an MCS performance estimate of what the system should generate. Nothing is added later.
4. Grid notification
We notify your network operator, or apply for G99 approval first on larger systems, which can take a few weeks.
5. Installation
Most homes take one or two days, with scaffold up for the roof work.
6. Handover
We set up the app with you and leave the MCS certificate you need to be paid for exporting.
